Jeannie Nelson, Executive Director of the Clinic since its founding in 1993, was awarded a Heroes in Health Care Award from the Virginia Health Care Foundation in 2016 for her leadership. To her right is Dr. Matt Vogel, a volunteer and former Board President.
The Northern Neck Health Action Group was formed in 1992 out of concerns raised at a Northern Neck Medical Association public forum on health care. A principal goal was to establish a free clinic for the working poor who have no insurance and cannot afford costs associated with basic medical care.
The Northern Neck Free Health Clinic opened in 1993, becoming Virginia’s 20th such facility, and operated one night a week in the Lancaster County Health Department. The service area includes Lancaster, Middlesex, Northumberland, Richmond and Westmoreland counties. Jean Nelson was the founding executive director. The Clinic’s first annual budget was set at $75,000.

“My husband and I have been Clinic patients over the past year and cannot tell you how much the Clinic and its volunteers and staff have been wonderful, giving the most kind service with efficiency and caring. They go above and beyond to assist the patient, including multiple follow-up calls and concerns.”

“I love coming to the Dental Clinic because I can smile again.”
“I have had several gum-line fillings and deep cleanings from the diligent students from VCU [School of Dentistry]. I have also had two teeth pulled, many cleanings, and other necessary procedures. There was absolutely no way I could have afforded all of this work without the Clinic. I can only imagine what condition my teeth would be in without you.”
